The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets recently agreed upon a trade that reunited starting pitcher Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor with their former GM David Stearns. In Stearns and Matt Arnolds’ first trade with one another the Brew Crew ended up receiving right-handed pitching prospect Coleman Crow in return.
Following the transaction Zack Scott, who served as the Mets general manager from January 2021-September 2021, spoke out regarding one trade proposal that he received from the Brewers that year. At that time David Stearns was in charge of Milwaukee’s baseball operations.
Former New York Mets GM Zack Scott leaked a trade proposal that he received from the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021.
According to Zack Scott, in 2021 he received a trade offer from David Stearns and the Brewers that would have sent Adrian Houser to New York that year. Milwaukee’s target was utility player Jeff McNeil. Stearns supposedly was interested in a one-for-one swap involving the two players.
Before the ’21 season, the Brewers asked me about (Jeff) McNeil for (Adrian) Houser.

Had that deal gone through the Mets would have had the initial leg up as the winner of the trade. In 2021 Adrian Houser made 26 starts and had a 3.22 ERA whereas Jeff McNeil had a down season consisting of a .679 OPS and 87 OPS+.
A year later, and extending through the 2023 season, the Brewers would have been the winners of this trade that was never accepted. McNeil was the 2022 batting title champion with a .326 batting average and he followed that up with a .270/.333/.378 season. During that same time frame Houser through 214 innings and posted a 4.42 ERA.

Despite David Stearns being willing to trade Adrian Houser a few years ago the two will now be together again for the 2024 season.
