The Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants completed a trade on Friday, May 10. This deal sent the recently designated for assignment Mitch White to the Brew Crew in exchange for cash considerations. Milwaukee will be White’s third organization this year, but he is a former top 20 prospect and it’s easy to see why the Brewers are excited about him.
Mitch White was a former top 20 pitching prospect.
After being drafted in the second round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers Mitch White quickly became a highly regarded prospect. Per MLB Trade Rumors White was ranked as a top 20 prospect for a few seasons by Baseball America. He debuted with the Dodgers in 2020, pitched well in 2021 (3.66 ERA across 46.2 innings pitched), but struggled in 2022 and was subsequently traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Milwaukee Brewers will be Mitch White’s third organization in 2024.
After being acquired by the Blue Jays in 2022 White struggled to find footing in the big leagues. Toronto ended up designating him for assignment earlier this year and trading him to the San Francisco Giants in a cash deal. White made one appearance with the Giants and now will join the Brewers in which they intend to use him primarily as a relief pitcher.
Mitch White has many tools in his pitch arsenal.
On the mound Mitch White has five different pitches in his arsenal. Baseball savant has him throwing a four seam fastball, sweeper, curveball, slider, and sinker. He has been four seam fastball dependent throughout his career, but Milwaukee has a knack for recognizing what pitches work the best for certain pitchers and generally they can find success as a Brewer as a result.
It will be interesting to see what the Brew Crew saw in him and if he can carve out a role with the team while having no minor league options left.
