Milwaukee Brewers high leverage set up man Joel Payamps has fallen upon hard times over the last 13 games. Dating back to August 17 he has surrendered at least one hit in each game. On five occasions he has surrendered both more than one hit in an outing and at least one earned run. His ERA over this stretch is 5.90.
Is Milwaukee Brewers high leverage reliever Joel Payamps in danger of losing his eighth inning role?
As a new member of the Brewers this off season Joel Payamps joined a bullpen that had been nearly completely gutted and turned over (with the exception of closer Devin Williams). He quickly earned the trust of Craig Counsell and earned the job as the eighth inning set up man.
Unfortunately, as noted above, he is slumping and with the postseason looming he may be in danger of losing his role. Rookie Abner Uribe has shown the ability to pitch in high stress situations and so has Elvis Peguero. Sadly Elvis Peguero was recently placed on the IL and won’t be eligible to be activated until the end of the season.

Based on the availability of other pitchers, Joel Payamps may continue to see eighth inning work over the final few weeks of the season. However, if his struggles continue, he may be hard to trust in the post season and Craig Counsell could turn his attention to other options.
