The Milwaukee Brewers designated reliever Enoli Paredes for assignment over the weekend. Per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune he has been claimed off of waivers by the Cubs. This move opens up a spot on the Brewers 40-man roster and it will be interesting to see who ends up occupying that spot.
Enoli Paredes was DFA’d by the Milwaukee Brewers and claimed by the Chicago Cubs.
After joining the Brewers on a Minor League deal in November of 2023 Enoli Paredes had his contract selected by Milwaukee in May. Eight of his first 10 appearances with the Brew Crew were scoreless but then forearm tendinitis resulted in him spending more than 60 days on the injured list. Since returning to the big league club in September he has surrendered runs in two out of three outings, was designated for assignment after the Brewers clinched the National League Central division, and now has been claimed by the Chicago Cubs.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a trio of pitchers who could return to the big league team soon.
It seems unlikely that the Brewers leave a 40-man roster spot unoccupied entering the playoffs, but one important thing to remember is that they have a trio of pitchers who could return to the big leagues soon. Bryse Wilson and Nick Mears both could return near the end of the month and have thrown multiple bullpen sessions within the past week. Additionally Bryan Hudson was optioned to Triple-A to get some rest, work on mechanics, and hopefully restore some velocity. Bringing back any of these three pitchers would not impact the 40-man roster but a corresponding move on the active roster would have to occur.
With a 40-man roster spot open who might the Milwaukee Brewers choose to occupy it?
With the playoffs a week away the Brewers may wait to announce a 40-man roster until later in the week/closer to the end of the season. Adding a pitcher to fill a role similar to what Caleb Boushley did at the end of last season is likely. This will allow Milwaukee to keep their top arms fresh before entering the playoffs. At this point in the season it would be a long shot for a top prospect like Jacob Misiorowski or Craig Yoho to be added to the 40-man roster.
