The Milwaukee Brewers are not known for making big-splash moves in free agency. Instead, oftentimes high-profile players leaving the team are the stories that make the biggest headlines. Such was the case over this past weekend when shortstop Willy Adames signed a seven-year $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. It is currently the largest contract in Giants franchise history (which dates back to 1883) and is the third-largest MLB contract ever signed by a Dominican-born player (Albert Pujols and Robinson Cano).
Sometimes, though, the Brewers’ overlooked signings and roster decisions go on to make tremendous positive impacts on the team. In recent years, the low-profile signings of players like Eric Thames, Jesus Aguilar, and Colin Rea have had massive impacts on the team, if but for a season or two.
Recently, another intriguing under-the-radar signing came to light.
The Milwaukee Brewers Signed Former Yankees Prospect Anthony Seigler
According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers signed Anthony Seigler, a 2018 first-round pick by the New York Yankees, to a minor league contract back on November 19.
Seigler, who is a switch hitter, can also throw with both of his hands. Per Rosiak, Seigler made history in 2023 when he caught right-handed and then went and played outfield left-handed in a game for the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate.
While he was drafted as a catcher, Seigler has also begun learning how to play second base and the outfield. In fact, all 118 games in which he played in 2024 were at second base.
While Seigler’s ability to switch hit and throw with both hands is impressive, he has struggled offensively since being taken two picks after Brice Turang in 2018.
While Turang is now arguably the best defensive player in the National League after winning the Platinum Glove Award, Seigler has yet to play a game higher than Double-A. In six minor league seasons, he has hit just .218/.359/.348.
That being said, 2024 was Seigler’s best year in professional baseball. Playing for the Somerset Patriots (Double-A), he slashed .234/.350/.398 with 12 home runs, 49 RBI, and 29 stolen bases.
What makes Seigler an intriguing prospect, and a possible fit for the Brewers, is that he can play multiple positions. Not only that, but he walks nearly as much as he strikes out. In his six professional seasons, he has 265 walks compared to 293 strikeouts.
