Marquette basketball head coach Shaka Smart still has the Villanova Wildcats’ number. Smart remains undefeated as the Golden Eagles head coach against the Wildcats all-time after he guided Marquette to an 87-74 win over Kyle Neptune’s squad.
Via John Leuzzi of USA Today Sports:
With tonight’s Marquette win, Shaka Smart moves to 8-0 vs. Villanova at MU. Marquette won just three games against Villanova in seven seasons under Wojo. Smart’s first win vs. Villanova on Jan. 19, 2022 was the first time Nova had lost at Finneran Pavilion in three years.
Marquette basketball is still undefeated against Villanova under Shaka Smart
As Leuzzi mentioned, Smart’s arrival at Marquette has sparked the Golden Eagles’ dominance of Villanova the school previously failed to achieve under then-head coach Steve Wojciechowski.
Marquette basketball relied on its pesky defense to thwart the Wildcats. Villanova turned the ball over 13 times, and the Golden Eagles capitalized on those errors by scoring 16 points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Marquette only committed six turnovers, which were translated into a meter total of two points by the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles went up to 17-3 overall this season and 8-1 in Big East play following the win over Villanova. Marquette and the Wildcats will still get to share the floor at least one more time in the 2024-25 college basketball season, as these Big East rivals are scheduled to face off anew on Feb. 21 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
