The 2023 NFL season is approaching. The Packers will look to have a bounce-back season this year after being one game away from missing the playoffs in 2022. There will be new faces, especially at quarterback, with a new starter in Jordan Love. There will also be a good amount of returning Packers players.
Certain players will need to have huge performances if they want to be with the Packers in the long term. These four Packers players are in a make-or-break year with the team.
Make-or-Break Year for These Four Packers Players
Josh Myers (Center)
This will be a crucial year for Josh Myers. He has not been a bad player by any means for the Packers. However, the pressure is on him to be very good is there because the Packers passed on Creed Humphrey for him.
When it comes to pass blocking, Myers is one of the best at it, as he does not give up that interior pressure and allows quarterbacks to step up in the pocket. The problem is his run-blocking, which has not been very good. It is a combination of missing blocking assignments or just simply getting overpowered. A good example was the Detroit Lions game in Week 18 last season, where he was just not getting any movement in the run game and was consistently getting pushed into the backfield. Myers can be a very good center in the NFL, but if he does not show improvement this year, the Packers will be looking for a new center.
Eric Stokes (Cornerback)
Unfortunately, Eric Stokes missed most of the 2022 season with a serious ankle injury. But before his injury, he struggled badly in coverage. Yes, Joe Barry’s scheme of playing a lot of zone did play a part in it, but even in man coverage, he did not hold up.
Quarterbacks had over a 100 passer rating when targeting Stokes. He did not build off his promising rookie season and looks to have a bounce-back season in his third year. Also, reports have come out that he should be fully healthy by training camp this summer. It is a big year for Eric Stokes, and hopefully, he will have a very good season as one of the Packers players who are under the microscope.
Devonte Wyatt (Defensive Tackle)
This is a big year for Devonte Wyatt despite him being only in his second year with the Packers. That is because the Packers are hoping he can take that next step, as he most likely will be the starter next to Kenny Clark this season. Wyatt showed flashes towards the end of the season of how good he can really be as he was getting more playing time.
Also, his age plays a big factor as he just turned 25 years old in March, meaning his development process will speed up. In addition, Kenny Clark stated in his media availability that he will push Wyatt this year. In just his second year, Wyatt will need to make a huge impact if he wants to become one of the better defensive Packers players.
Darnell Savage (Safety)
Darnell Savage will be with the Packers this year as they picked up his fifth-year option. For most of 2022, he did not play well and got benched for a couple of games. He did come on strong in the last couple of games where the Packers’ defense as a whole played much better.
Since his promising rookie season, Savage has been too inconsistent and has played very poorly these last two seasons. Head coach Matt Lafluer stated that Savage will be a starter this year, showing he still has faith in him to be a good player. Also, it helps the Packers did not draft a safety high this year because it was a very weak class at that position. If Darnell Savage wants to be with the Packers beyond this year, he needs to have a very strong season, or they will certainly replace him.
