Thanks to Keston Hiura’s hot bat, the Milwaukee Brewers came away victorious on Sunday afternoon 5-2 and were able to avoid being swept by the Chicago Cubs.
The beginning of the game was quite a struggle for the Brewers as starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff gave up a solo home run to Cubs outfielder Ian Happ and labored through the first inning throwing 36 total pitches. That was followed by another solo home run hit in the fourth inning by Seiya Suzuki.
Woodruff eventually settled down and gave a good effort. He went five and 2/3 innings giving up two runs, four hits, two walks and struck out five Cubs batters. He ended up with getting a no decision.
Meanwhile, Chicago Cubs starter Justin Steele was on his A game all day. The first three innings, Steele struck out seven Milwaukee Brewers hitters.
Overall, Steele’s stats for the game were excellent: six innings, two hits, nine strikeouts. He also got a no decision. It looked like it was going to be another quiet and frustrating day for the Brewers offense. (Clears throat) Not so fast…
Major Turning Point
In the seventh inning, the Brewers offense FINALLY came alive starting with a solo home run from Rowdy Tellez off Cubs reliever Mark Leiter Jr. and the lead was cut to 2-1. They were just getting started.

Keston Hiura. Keep that name in mind.
Immediately after the home run from Tellez, the Cubs substituted a new relief pitcher: Brandon Hughes. Next batter: Keston Hiura. Hiura stepped up to the plate and hit a ROCKET of a home run off Hughes to tie the game at two. He was not done yet doing damage…

Brewers Offense Seizes Control Late
In the eighth, the Brewers finally took their first lead of the day thanks to a sacrifice fly from Willy Adames. The score was 3-2. But the biggest blow came later that inning.

Hiura Stays Hot
Hiura steps up to the plate again in the eighth and delivered the knockout punch: a two run home run to left center.

Unlike Saturday afternoon, the Milwaukee bullpen shut the door and secured the win in the ninth inning. With the bounce back win, the Brewers improved their record to 64-56 and now look ahead to a HUGE three game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles starting on Monday evening.
