Keisean Nixon May Set Packers Franchise Kick Return Record This Season

Let’s be honest, this 2022 Green Bay Packers season has been tough to watch. However, there have been some bright spots. For one, Christian Watson is doing things no rookie wide receiver has done since Randy Moss in 1998. Additionally, Keisean Nixon is bringing life to an aspect of the Packers’ game that hasn’t been consistently productive in decades: returning kickoffs. In fact, with four games remaining, Nixon may set the Packers franchise record for most games in a season with 100+ kick return yards.

Packers record for games in a season with at least 100 kickoff return yards is 6 (Dave Hampton, 1971). Keisean Nixon is at 4 with 4 games to go.

    Keisean Nixon: 2022 Return Stats

So far this season, Keisean Nixon has returned 25 kicks for 617 yards. This is quite astounding as he did not get the job full time until midway through the season. This alone makes the fact the he leads the NFL in kick returns all the more impressive.

#Packers Keisean Nixon ranks 2nd in the NFL in kickoff return yards (617, trails leader by 3 yards) and 5th in kickoff return average (24.7, trails leader by 1.1) and would rank 3rd in punt return average (14.0) if he had enough to qualify.

He's also 1st in PFF return grade.

In addition to kickoffs, Nixon has returned four punts for 56 yards. Getting more playing time on defense, he has recorded 20 tackles, an interception, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

    Making Packers History

Many Packers fans may remember Desmond Howard and his return heroics during the Super Bowl XXXI season. However, most of his returns and touchdowns came off of punt returns, not kickoff returns. He had 22 kickoff returns for 460 yards and no touchdowns during the regular season that year. He did, though, have 58 punt returns for 875 yards and three touchdowns.

As the Green Bay Packers Tweeted out last week, Nixon is the first Packers player in the past 40 years to two 50+ yard kickoff returns in the same game:

    — Green Bay Packers (@packers) December 2, 2022

As mentioned in the Zach Kruse’s first Tweet above, Nixon is also two games away from tying the Packers’ record for most 100-yard return games in a season. Nixon has four consecutive games with 100+ return yards and has four games remaining.

For a season that may very well end in disappointment, at least the Packers have found their kick returner of the future.
