Jordan Love’s Future With Packers Up in the Air

The Green Bay Packers sent shock waves through the NFL when they traded up in the first round to draft Jordan Love back in 2020. Many fans despised the pick and, unfortunately, have treated Jordan Love with contempt as if he chose to get drafted by Green Bay. The decision to draft Love was, of course, that of the Packers front office (not Jordan Love’s) and it followed what had been a couple of down years for aging quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Love, the supposed Quarterback of the Future, walked into a situation that few would want. Rodgers, for his part, went on to win the NFL MVP Award in each of the past two seasons. Now, as Jordan Love enters his third year in the league, his future with the team that drafted him is in doubt.

Aaron Rodgers Signed a Long-Term Extension

Aaron Rodgers signing his three-year $150 million contract extension makes things quite complicated for Jordan Love. If Rodgers plays through the duration of his contract, he will surpass the time left on Love’s four-year rookie deal. Green Bay could, of course, pick up Love’s fifth year option, but that is not a given. Additionally, if the timing was right, Love would hit free agency at the end of a possible fifth year at the same time Rodgers’ contract expires. In other words, the Packers could lose both of their top two current quarterbacks at the same time.

    What Will the Packers Do?

There have been many rumors that Jordan Love will be traded. This makes some sense as the Packers may want to salvage something for Love, a former first round pick. Many believed he would be traded during this year’s NFL Draft for a high-profile wide receiver or pick. That, of course, did not happen.

Another option, of course, would be to allow Love to keep developing under Aaron Rodgers until he is ready to take over and Rodgers retires. This could certainly still happen, despite all the conjecture.

    Only time will tell.
