The Green Bay Packers created a lot of excitement for the future of this team in 2023. One off-season removed from trading away Aaron Rodgers resulted in playoff and Super Bowl conversations for 2024. That being said, the Packers will certainly have some areas to address before the start of the season.
The Packers had a great start in doing so when they signed Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs. Those signings filled two very important holes on this team. However, there is still work to do and another position just took a hit.
Former Green Bay Packers Starter Signs With The Carolina Panthers
According to Bill Huber of Packers Central:
The Green Bay Packers suffered an understated blow to their roster on Monday, with offensive tackle Yosh Nijman agreeing to terms with the Carolina Panthers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
With that, the Packers do not have an experienced offensive tackle to work behind left tackle Rasheed Walker and right tackle Zach Tom. The Packers were going to draft an offensive tackle, anyway. Now, unless they land one of the few quality veterans available – Denver’s Cameron Fleming would make sense – they’ll almost certainly have to draft a tackle early.
Luke Tenuta, Caleb Jones and Kadeem Telfort combined to play exactly zero games in 2023. Tenuta, a sixth-round pick by Buffalo in 2022, spent the year on injured reserve. Jones, an undrafted free agent in 2022, spent the year on the gameday inactives list. Telfort, an undrafted free agent in 2023, spent the year on the practice squad.
Where Does This Leave The Packers Offensive Line?
Including both playoff games, the main starting offensive line for the Packers in 2023 was Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, and Zach Tom at left tackle.
Jon Runyan has since moved on, however, the other four remain. With the departure of David Bakhtiari and now Yosh Nijman, offensive line will be a focus for the Packers this off-season. Many have pegged the Packers to use their first round draft pick on an offensive lineman, which wouldn’t surprise anyone.
However, there are still numerous free agents the Packers could bring in that would provide adequate depth. Keeping Jordan Love upright will be the offense’s number one goal in 2024. With the weapons the Packers have on the outside coupled with the bruising running back duo of Josh Jacobs and AJ Dillon, the offensive line will need to perform each and every week to allow for those playmakers to get going.
