The Green Bay Packers have an embarrassment of riches at the tackle position. In addition to starters David Bakhtiari and Zach Tom, the Packers have Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, and Caleb Jones all capable of playing tackle. Having so many talented players at the tackle position is an excellent problem to have.
On Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs lost their Week One matchup at home to the Detroit Lions in a 21-20 heartbreakers. Throughout the game, the Chiefs’ offense was plagued by poor offensive line and wide receiver play. Specifically, their left tackle Donovan Smith allowed seven quarterback pressures according to PFF. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor allowed two pressures and was criticized on social media for getting away with numerous false starts.
The Chiefs’ offensive guards were no better, allowing eight combined quarterback pressures. In short, if Kansas City wants a chance to repeat as Super Bowl champions, they need to address their offensive line.
Could the Green Bay Packers Trade Yosh Nijman to the Kansas City Chiefs?
As mentioned, the Packers have plenty of tackles on their 53-man roster. In addition, left guard Elgton Jenkins has played left tackle in the past, and may even take over that position in the future when Bakhtiari’s time in Green Bay comes to an end.
Recently, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich was asked about Nijman not starting at right tackle, as many believed he would going into the season. In response, Stenavich said (via Ryan Wood):
“Right now, he’s a backup tackle for us. That’s where he’s at and football is a very competitive sport and some guys rise to that competition and some guys don’t, so that’s basically what I have to say about that.”
