The Green Bay Packers are taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend in what figures to be a pretty significant matchup for both teams. The Packers (3-5) are coming off a much needed win against the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday. The Steelers (5-3) are coming off a big win against the Tennessee Titans.
A big storyline going into any Packers-Steelers matchup is the “T.J. Watt storyline.” The Packers famously traded back in the 2017 NFL Draft to eventually select CB Kevin King and passing up T.J. Watt in the process. That decision is one every Packers fan would take back if they could. Watt played his college ball for the Wisconsin Badgers. However, there is another Wisconsin Badgers linebacker who was taken in that same draft (this time by the Packers) who highlighted why he left the team after just one year.
Former Green Bay Packers Fourth-Round Draft Pick Vince Biegel Highlights Why He Left The Team After Just One Season
According to Biegel, a “potential break” in his foot was discovered during MRI testing at the NFL Combine, which likely led to him slipping in the 2017 draft. After he was taken by the Packers, Biegel broke his middle finger in his first practice in Green Bay — leading to immediate surgery.
With a club on his hand, Biegel practiced the day after breaking his middle finger AND undergoing surgery on the finger just to break a metatarsal in the opposite foot of the one that was developing a break.
Eventually, Biegel ended up having to undergo surgery on both feet, meaning that he met many of his veteran teammates for the first time in a wheelchair. Biegel’s story goes to show you how quickly things can spiral in a sport that demands so much physicality out of bodies that are built up to the extremes.
Here was how Biegel’s social media thread ended:
“What I learned from this experience is life can throw you some tough curveballs. But it’s the tough times (not the easy ones) where the greatest growth comes from.
From this experience it opened my eyes to those who have limited mobility. It’s created a yearning in my heart to help these people.
Hope you guys enjoyed the story. I loved my time in Green Bay. Wish it could’ve lasted longer, but god had different plans. #Thankful”
How Did Vince Biegel’s Career Go After The Green Bay Packers?
After his season with the Packers in 2017, Biegel has bounced around a few teams. He spent the 2018 season with the New Orleans Saints and spent three seasons (2019-2021) with the Miami Dolphins. In 2022 he signed with the Baltimore Ravens but suffered a season ending Achilles Injury before the year started.
Currently he is a free agent and there is no word if he has garnered any interest around the league.
