The Green Bay Packers are very much in the running back market, and one of the names that can be moved by Tuesday NFL’s trade deadline is New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley. According to NFL insider Jay Glazer of FOX Sports said on Sunday morning:
“There are a lot of teams that are in the running back market. Baltimore, Cleveland, Green Bay, is still in the running back market as well. Dallas hasn’t been calling around.”
Two of the top names on the market at the running back position are Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans and Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants. Henry appears not to be going anywhere, and it also feels as if Barkley may not either, but Tennessee has a better chance of making the playoffs this season than Barkley does.
New York may not want to give Barkley a long-term contract. Should the Packers try and trade for him before the trade deadline on Tuesday?
The Green Bay Packers Trading For Saquon Barkley Would Make Sense for them, But the New York Giants Will Never Do It But They Should
Green Bay has been in talks previously with other big-name running backs in trade talks. Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts is someone they were eyeing, but Taylor was never traded and decided to return to the Colts. He did play college football at the University of Wisconsin, and that move would have made sense for both parties at the time.
Now, Green Bay has pivoted to other options, and Barkley could be one of those options. Saquon Barkley will be a free agent at the end of the season. It would be a lateral move for him if traded to the Packers, and he would help this team out. Barkley wouldn’t mind the move if Green Bay gave him a long-term extension. He would be a massive upgrade over Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.
However, the New York Giants will never trade him because he is their best offensive player when available, but the Giants should try and trade him for a late-round pick. Barkley, this season, has rushed for 412 yards on 110 carries and one touchdown. He has averaged 3.7 yards per carry and has also caught 19 passes for 87 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Saquon Barkley has averaged 4.6 yards per reception.
He is 26 years old and was the second overall pick in 2018 in the NFL Draft by Penn State. Barkley is currently playing on a 1-year deal worth $10.1 million. Will see what the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers do before the NFL trade deadline.
