The Green Bay Packers’ top two quarterbacks heading into the 2023 season appear to be Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. They both received reps in the 21-17 preseason loss against the New England Patriots game that was cut short with 10:29 remaining in regulation.
Sean Clifford appears that he is will be a perfect backup quarterback for Jordan Love this season. During the second preseason game, Clifford completed 13-of-19 passes for 137 yards. Even with not throwing a single touchdown pass in the game, he did not turn the football over. His fourth-quarter comeback attempt was cut short.
During the preseason, he is proving his worth as the second quarterback on the Green Bay Packers roster. It is important to have a reliable backup quarterback in the NFL. Sean Clifford was a fifth-round pick (149th overall selection) in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Penn State.
The reason why he makes a perfect backup is that he is already 25 years old. Jordan Love is 24 years old and is the starting quarterback on this roster. They will see reps again in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Why Sean Clifford Is the Perfect Backup QB to Jordan Love
Sean Clifford understands his role on this football team as the backup quarterback to Love. He is playing well enough for the Green Bay Packers this preseason that if something were to happen to Love during the season, Clifford would be ready to step in and make plays right away for this offense.
In the first preseason meeting, he completed 20-of-26 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was a starting quarterback at Penn State in college for several seasons. Clifford is also no threat to take Love’s job either, and the Packers want to make this quarterback transition as smooth as possible.
Green Bay hopes Clifford will not have to play a down during the regular season. Also, if he does need to play during the regular season, the Green Bay Packers know that he can push the football down the field.
After the game against New England, he said to the media, “Being able to come out here and protect the football but still push the ball downfield, I was proud of our guys.” He also mentioned, “First and foremost, I’ve got to give it to the O-line. I was so comfy back there today. It was really nice to be back there with those guys. I thought they did a hell of a job and allowed me to then really feel good, be able to push the ball down the field.”
