The Green Bay Packers have some work to do on their wide receiver room before the 2025 NFL season. Christian Watson is going to be out for most of the year after suffering a torn ACL against the Chicago Bears in Week 18. According to recent reports and rumors out of the NFL Scouting Combine, it is believed that Green Bay will be very active in free agency, especially when it comes to three specific positions.
One of these positions, of course, is wide receiver due to Watson’s injury and the underperformance of their other top three pass catchers. While there is no doubt that Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks are talented, the fact of the matter is that all three of them had drop percentages between 10-12% in 2024.
The fact of the matter, though, is that if Green Bay is going to try to acquire a player to be a traditional “number one” wide receiver, it is going to take targets away from their other pass catchers. And one of their current players has already expressed dissatisfaction with his role.
Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Was Unhappy with His Role
Doubs played 13 games in 2024 and caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns. He missed three games due to injuries (multiple concussions), but missed one game early in the year due to a suspension that was handed down by the team.
This occurred in Week Five when the Packers went on the road to take on Doubs’ hometown team, the Los Angeles Rams. The third-year wide receiver did not show up to practice for two days, leading many coaches and teammates to be concerned about his mental health.
According to reports, Doubs was unhappy with the number of targets that he was getting in the passing game.
There are, however, two things very wrong with this, if the reports are true. The first is that Jordan Love missed two of the first four games of the season due to a spraining his MCL in Week One. Malik Willis, who is better known for his running abilities, did not throw the ball as often as Love did.
The second is that Doubs was second on the team in targets at the time of his suspension, trailing Reed by just one.
As he enters the final year of his rookie contract, many wonder if this will be his last year with the Packers, or if he will even make it to training camp with Green Bay.
Los Angeles Rams Insider Suggests His Team Target Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs
In a recent article posted by Sports Illustrated, Rams insider Matthew Schmidt suggested that Los Angeles, who is looking to trade former All-Pro Cooper Kupp, look to Green Bay and Doubs for wide receiver depth:
“Perhaps, and a very intriguing trade option could be on the table: Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs.
“The Packers are apparently making a push for Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, which, so long as Doubs does not get dealt to the Seahawks in a potential deal, would make him expendable.
“Doubs already wasn’t happy as Green Bay’s No. 2 option behind Jayden Reed this past year, so he certainly isn’t going to like falling to No. 3 on the depth chart.
“The Rams would probably be able to nab Doubs for a very affordable cost, and while he may not be a top-flight receiver, they don’t need him to be. They already have Nacua. Doubs does, however, have some very obvious potential that Sean McVay could unlock.
“Still just 24 years old, Doubs is very talented and has good size, standing 6-foot-2. He caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns this past season, and he absolutely has room for growth.”
As Schmidt mentions, Doubs will not exactly see his role increase in Los Angeles, though perhaps playing in his hometown would help him be more satisfied with whatever role he has.
