Many Green Bay Packers fans are breathing a huge sigh of relief after Jordan Love got his first win of the season against the Los Angeles Rams.
Given how the Rams started their season, some fans may have expected the team’s away game at SoFi Stadium to be more comfortable than the final score suggests. However, a team that badly needs to bounce back after a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings could use any boost to generate momentum for the Packers moving forward.
One major talking point for many Packers fans was Jordan Love’s performance on the offense. While he didn’t put up the same passing yards as last week, many would agree that he’s becoming more reliable as he continues to shake off the rust from his game.
However, one analyst thinks that the Packers have plenty of areas for improvement as their close win against the Rams reveal one crucial inconsistency in Matt LaFleur’s game plan.
Analyst expresses concern over Green Bay Packers’ lack of offensive firepower during first half of Week 5 win vs. Rams
Zone Coverage’s Evan Pricco wrote about the Packers’ offensive run during the game. He said that while the Packers first found success with giving the ball to Josh Jacobs during the first run, their insistence on getting the rust off Love may have made the match a lot tougher than necessary:
But outside of that drive, they struggled to move the ball in the first half. Excluding the touchdown drive, the Packers had five other possessions in the first 30 minutes. Those led to three three-and-outs, an interception returned for a score, and a field goal to end the half. They also didn’t convert a single first down on five attempts during the first half.
It was frustrating because Love and the offense showed that they have the talent and the ability to move the ball down the field methodically, but they could not execute. It was confounding why they went into halftime only leading the Rams 13-10.
In LaFleur’s defense, Love did put up a better performance when it comes to taking care of the pigskin. He finished the game with 224 passing yards for two touchdowns and one interception. While his completion rate is slowly getting better, it’s also clear that the absences of Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson would make the passing game less effective.
Matt LaFleur has a lot of tinkering to do with the current roster if they want to push with a balanced offensive game plan with their current roster. He cannot expect the team to win every game if they continue to force the passing game the same way they did against Los Angeles.
