The Green Bay Packers are heading to the 2024 NFL season with a new defensive coordinator in Jeff Hafley. The Packers must be hoping that they have finally made the perfect hire in Hafley and that he would turn into a long-term asset for the franchise. That has always been the goal for every hire, but the defensive coordinator role in Green Bay has been relatively volatile, as encapsulated in a three-word summary of the team’s offseason so far by Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

For the third time in Matt LaFleur’s tenure as head coach, he will have a new defensive coordinator. He went somewhat off the grid by going to the college ranks to hire a sitting head coach, Boston College’s Jeff Hafley. He replaces Joe Barry, who three seasons ago replaced Mike Pettine. The Packers have been trying to get this position right for more than a decade. The past four people to hold the job all were fired, although Dom Capers’ run from 2009 to ’17 had plenty of success (including a Super Bowl) before things soured. — Rob Demovsky

It is still too early to tell whether Hafley will last longer than his predecessors, but the promise is certainly there for the former Boston College head coach. And he’s also got a talented group to work on. In 2023, the Green Bay Packers finished 13th in the league with 21. 4 points allowed per game. There is still so much room for improvement for the Packers’ stop unit, so expect Hafley to be under the microscope more often than not in his first year with the team.
