The Green Bay Packers took a major leap of faith last season by trading away future Hall of Famer and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. The move, which was met by criticism from a large portion of the fanbase and the national media, was intended to pave the way for Jordan Love, whom the Packers traded up to pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Love spent his first season in Green Bay, a season affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, on the Packers’ practice squad. After backup quarterback Tim Boyle left in free agency, Love assumed the mantle as the team’s second string passer.
After three years of learning from Rodgers and working with coaches Matt LaFleur and Tom Clements, the team felt he was ready. Love rewarded their faith in him by putting together the best first season by a Packers’ starting quarterback in franchise history:
Quarterback | Completion % | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions | Passer Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jordan Love | 64.2% | 4,159 | 32 | 11 | 96.1 |
Aaron Rodgers | 63.6% | 4,038 | 28 | 13 | 93.8 |
Brett Favre | 64.1% | 3,227 | 18 | 13 | 85.3 |
Prior to the 2023 season, the Packers bought out Love’s fifth-year option and gave him a two-year deal that would pay him $24 million between his fourth and fifth seasons. As the 2024 season approaches, the eyes of many fans are on Love and the Packers as they await the details of his next contract.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Is Eligible for an Extension
The NFL world was shocked by recent news that Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff had been given a four-year $212 million contract extension. In this new deal, Goff has the potential to make $53 million per season, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.
Prior to that signing, speculation around contract talks between Love and the Packers estimated that Love would be paid somewhere in the $48-$51 million range. However, this deal by Goff has many wondering if the face of the Packers’ franchise may get even more than that.
Love is represented by Athletes First, renowned for their hard negotiations and tendency to get top dollar for their clients.
Adam Schefter Drops a Bomb Regarding Negotiations Between the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love
Appearing on ESPN radio in Milwaukee this morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that the Packers and Love are nowhere close to getting a deal done:
“Right now, They’re not close to making it happen” – @AdamSchefter on Jordan Love extension with the Green Bay #Packers @ESPNMilwaukee
— Jen, Gabe, and Chewy (@JenGabeChewy) May 15, 2024
Should this be cause for concern among Packers fans?
There is no way Green Bay is going into the 2024 NFL season with a lame duck quarterback, that is a quarterback that is not signed beyond this year.
It is May, it is still early. The two sides will likely come to a deal before training camp in August. However, the fact that they are far apart at the moment may mean Love is wanting more money than fans and analysts originally thought he would get.
And, to be frank, he deserves it.
