The Green Bay Packers are busy at work prepping for the 2024 NFL season. Despite the sudden retirement of one of their rookie offensive linemen, there are plenty things to feel good about going forward. New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has said that he is instituting a new defensive scheme that will much more aggressive and, hopefully, better against the run.
On offense, the Packers are poised and excited for their dynamic young core of players, led by quarterback Jordan Love, to take their next step in their second season playing together. Last year, the team went 7-3 in their final 10 games on their way to a NFC Wild Card berth. Expectations this season almost certainly will be greater.
A major question that has surrounded the team this offseason, however, has been Love’s contract status. Last season, Green Bay bought out his fifth-year option by giving him a two-year contract. Earlier this month, he became eligible to sign another contract extension, but negotiations are publicly quiet.
The Detroit Lions Gave Jared Goff a Massive Contract Extension
Yesterday, it was reported that the Detroit Lions had agreed to a massive contract extension with Jared Goff, the former first overall pick that they acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade for Matthew Stafford.
Goff is getting a four-year contract extension worth $212 million with $170 million of that guaranteed. In his three seasons with the Lions, Goff has completed 66.5% of his passes for 12,258 yards and 78 touchdowns against 27 interceptions.
With Goff at the helm of their offense, the Lions have gone from one of the worst teams in the NFL to appearing in the NFC Championship Game last season.
Of course, the biggest question about this extension, at least for the Packers and their fans, is how much will Love now make on his next contract?
NFL Analyst Reveals What Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Could Make on Next Contract
Last week, former NFL agent Joel Corey wrote a fascinating article for CBS Sports that detailed how the Packers’ approach to Aaron Rodgers, and how he was paid compared to his peers, may affect the team’s contract negotiations with Love.
In the article, Corey claims that Love could make more than $50 million. This latest development between the Lions and Goff, in which the quarterback will make $52 million, may have driven up Love’s price.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report writes:
“It’s fair for the Packers to believe that Love’s resume isn’t strong enough to justify a market-leading contract. However, the longer Green Bay waits on an extension, the more likely it is that those top-five values approach Burrow’s deal.
“Using Corry’s top-five positioning, Goff’s deal has already pushed Love’s value into the $51-52 million-per-year range. That would put Love between Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens—the MVP runner-up in 2022 and the reigning MVP, respectively.”
Love is entering the final year on his two-year deal signed last spring, so there is no question that a contract will be agreed upon at some point this summer.
The big question is, “how much?”
