Green Bay Packers: Divisional Rival Extends Franchise Quarterback

The Green Bay Packers had a successful 2023-24 season, tallying a playoff win with the youngest team to ever do so. Despite a successful season in the frame of expectation, they did not win the NFC North division. The owner of that title was the Detroit Lions, their first NFC North win in franchise history to go along with their second NFC Championship appearance. With the Packers exiting a ‘rebuild’ into contention for the Super Bowl, the team to beat is the Detroit Lions, when they meet twice a year. Green Bay Packers NFC North Rival Signs QB To Massive Extension

Jared Goff is a 29-year-old quarterback drafted by the Los Angeles Rams as the number-one pick in 2016. Goff quickly popped onto the scene with the ability to run high-powered offenses, making a Superbowl appearance in his third year throwing for over 4600 yards and 30 touchdowns. After being traded in the 2021 offseason for former Detroit Lions QB and future Hall Of Famer Matthew Stafford, both Stafford and Goff found success with their new teams.

In his time with the Detroit Lions, Goff has thrown for over 9,000 yards and 59 touchdowns, leading the Lions to historic seasons for the otherwise underwhelming franchise. In the offseason following his NFC Championship appearance, the Lions committed to Goff for another four years with a contract that makes him the second richest QB in the NFL.

Another done deal in Detroit: Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN.

In his career, Goff has an impressive 5-2 record against the Green Bay Packers. In those seven games, he threw 12 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Most recently the Packers were able to pick up an important win against the Lions that helped propel them into playoff position.

This is not the only big re-signing the Detroit Lions have inked this offseason, as they also extended wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive lineman Penei Sewell with the highest-paid contracts for each position respectively. Now with the big-budget signing of their franchise QB the Detroit Lions will have to rely on draft talent to secure their spot on top of the NFC North. After the Lions and Packers’ impressive seasons, the NFL world could be in store for a handful of entertaining years’ worth of the NFC North rivalry.
