Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS) was never really a popular player among the fans. A fifth round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he spent four seasons in Green Bay with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Aaron Rodgers.
When he hit free agency following the 2021 NFL season, MVS signed to play with another all-time great quarterback in Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. The contract that he signed with them, a three-year $30 million deal, was questioned by Packers fans at the time as a bit of an overpay.
The reason being, of course, that MVS is an inconsistent pass catcher. While his speed demands the respect of defenses, his tendency to drop passes makes him relatively ineffective. Granted, he was a huge part of the Chiefs’ march to the Super Bowl last season, and he was the Packers’ best wide receiver in their 2020 NFC Championship loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That all being said, MVS has caught less than 50% of the passes thrown his way throughout his career. On Monday night, with Kansas City trailing the Philadelphia Eagles 21-17 with 1:47 left to play, Mahomes launched a perfect pass to a wide open MVS down field. He had to dive to reach Mahomes’ pass, but the ball landed perfectly in his hands. And he dropped it.
Disgusting. MVS serves no purpose if he can’t catch these. Perfect pass . pic.twitter.com/MdELQ2bJYQ

While that drop is not the only (or even the biggest) reason why Kansas City lost, it certainly did not help their cause, and Packers fans were quick to roast MVS after the drop occurred.

If any fans know the pain of watching MVS drop a pass, it’s Packers fans, and they were out on social media in full force following the play shown above:

Marquez Valdes-Scantling with a painful drop….given his history, you can’t blame the rain…he just has bad hands.
It’s a shame too…he has every other physical gift you’d want in a WR. Tall, big frame, fast, long arms, leaping ability….but the ball hits the grass way too…

Maybe Mark Daniels was onto something

Back during MVS’s time with Green Bay, Mark Daniels, a Packers beat reporter, asked Matt LaFleur how he could live with MVS. At the time, many were angry that he would dare ask such a question.
Now, it appears that many are ready to ask Andy Reid the same question.
