Former Green Bay Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell found himself the topic of several headlines following Thursday night’s game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams in Santa Clara — and that’s for the wrong reason. Campbell has become a hot topic after apparently refusing to play, as revealed following the Niners’ 12-6 loss to the Rams.
Campbell was started for the 49ers for several games but lost the gig when Dre Greenlaw was finally given the green light to play. That may have triggered Campbell’s odd decision to decline to take the field versus the Rams.
Former Green Bay Packers LB De’Vondre Campbell sparks controversy in Week 15 Rams-49ers game
It’s a decision that he might already be regretting. In any case, many have already called him out for his action, including no other than Niners star tight end George Kittle, who led San Francisco in the Rams game with 61 receiving yards on four catches and seven targets.
“It’s very dumb, very stupid, very immature…. I don’t see how you can do that to your teammates,” Kittle said following the contest, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.
Campbell played three seasons with the Packers before signing a one-year deal worth $5 million with the 49ers last March. For many Green Bay fans, this latest controversy involving Campbell feels a bit familiar, given the shots he took at the Packers after he signed with the 49ers.
On the season, Campbell has just two passes defended and 79 combined tackles to go with three tackles for losses and a quarterback hit.
