Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur Gives Big Update On Rashan Gary Vs The Chicago Bears

The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears start their 2023 campaign at Soldier Field on Sunday, September 10th.  The matchup will feature two quarterbacks looking to prove they can be the face of the franchise.

The Packers committed to Jordan Love this off-season by trading away Aaron Rodgers.  The Bears committed to Justin Fields this off-season by trading away their number one overall draft pick.  To say the “stage is set” for week one is an understatement.  However, there has been a fairly significant update regarding Justin Field’s ability to stay upright.

Matt Lafleur Says Rashan Gary Will Play When The Green Bay Packers Take On The Chicago Bears… On A “Pitch Count”

The healing process of edge rusher Rashan Gary after he tore his ACL last season is progressing to the point that he is scheduled to play against the Bears in Week One, but he will not be playing quite the same role as before the injury occurred.

Although Gary has been participating fully in practice for over a week, head coach Matt LaFleur said this week the team will manage his playing time once the regular season begins.

“Yeah, we’ll put him on a pitch count. We’re going to be smart with him, knowing this is a marathon. Working with our athletic training staff, just in terms of how much volume we want to give him,” LaFleur said, via Zach Kruse of USAToday.com.

Rashan Gary was in the midst of one of his best seasons ever before going down with an injury last year.  Having had five sacks in his first four games of the season, and with six sacks prior to the injury, he was well on his way to surpassing his career high of 9.5 set in 2021.

Although Gary played in only 75% of the team’s games the last two seasons, he has accumulated 15.5 sacks.  If Gary stays healthy, he is expected to be considered one of the best edge rushers in the league for years to come.

Having Gary out there, even if it is on a pitch count, will certainly up the number of QB pressures the Packers get on Justin Fields.  It will be crucial for the defense to honor Fields’ rushing ability, however, pressure on any quarterback usually leads to a win for the defense.
