Following the 2022 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers decided to move on from several long-time veteran players, who also happened to be fan favorites. Of course, the most notable of these was future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was traded to the New York Jets. This move was made because Jordan Love was waiting in the wings, waiting to take over as the starter.
However, while the Packers had a replacement already in place for Rodgers at quarterback, the same cannot be said of the other players that they released. These included kicker Mason Crosby, wide receiver Randall Cobb, and tight end Marcedes Lewis (among others). Instead of having younger players waiting in the wings, Green Bay selected their replacements in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Anders Carlson was selected to replace Crosby, Jayden Reed was taken to replace Cobb as the primary slot wide receiver, and Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft replaced Lewis (and Robert Tonyan) at tight end.
And while Reed and and Kraft have emerged as stars, Crosby’s replacement is no longer on the team.
The Green Bay Packers Struggled to Replace Mason Crosby
In his final season with the Packers, Crosby made 86.2% of his field goals and 94.9% of his extra points. Unfortunately, Carlson could not come close to either of those numbers in his lone season with Green Bay.
As a rookie, he made just 81.8% of his field goals and 87.5% of his extra points while leading the NFL in missed kicks. The Packers brought in Greg Joseph to compete with Carlson for the kicker job in 2024, a role that neither ended up winning.
Instead, Green Bay claimed Brayden Narveson off of waivers to be their kicker, but not even he could hold onto the job. He was released after seven weeks and a 70.2% field goal percentage. Brandon McManus, of course, was signed to replace him, and performed well with a field goal percentage over 95%.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby Has Announced His Retirement
On Tuesday, during his radio show in Milwaukee, the former Packers kicker announced his official retirement from the NFL. Crosby did not play in 2024, and has been doing his radio show for about a year. However, he had not filed his retirement papers with the league.
That has now changed.
As one might have expected, fans were quick to congratulate the future Packers Hall of Fame kicker on his career:
Mason Crosby has officially announced his retirement from the NFL.
Truly one of the greatest Packers of all time.

Since he did not play in 2024, the earliest Crosby can be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame is in four years. Undoubtedly, he will get in as soon as he becomes eligible.
And he deserves it.
