The Green Bay Packers will have a new President/CEO in the near future. In accordance with team bylaws, Mark Murphy must retire at the age of 70. Green Bay might already have a clue as to who will replace Murphy, who turns 69 in July.
Since 2007, Mark Murphy has served as president and CEO of the Packers. New York native, and former Super Bowl champion with the Washington Commanders, served as athletic director at Colgate (1992-2003) and Northwestern (2003-’07). Now there are rumblings about the next CEO/President already being identified.
The Green Bay Packers May Have Already Identified Their New CEO / President
Matt Schneidman of The Athletic broke the news:
With team president and CEO Mark Murphy now talking about his mandated retirement in 2025 more openly, do you expect his successor to come from within the current organization? — Peter H.
It seems to be a widely held belief that Ed Policy will replace Murphy. He joined the Packers as vice president and general counsel in 2012 and has held the title of chief operating officer and general counsel since 2018.
Policy, 53, was born and raised in the Midwest. He worked for the Arena Football League (2001-’08) as a deputy commissioner and president after graduating from Notre Dame and Stanford Universities. Following that, he served as the AFL’s acting commissioner from 2008-2009.
Afterwards, he became an executive consultant with the National Football League in 2009. Green Bay hired him as vice president and general counsel in 2012 after he held the executive consultant position for only two seasons. Policy was promoted to chief operating officer after serving in that position until 2018.
A promotion to CEO would help maintain continuity in the Packers’ hierarchy. Murphy has done a lot for the Packers and the community in Green Bay. Policy has been there for the majority of it and would hopefully continue that same work.
