Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis had to play in the second half because Jordan Love left the game with a groin injury and he did not return. On the final drive of the game, Willis threw a 51-yard completion to Jayden Reed. It eventually led to the game-winning 24-yard field goal for Brandon McManus to give Green Bay a 30-27 win over Jacksonville.
With the win, the Packers improve to 6-2 on the year. With the loss, the Jaguars dropped to 2-6 on the year. It will be interesting to see if Malik Willis will be the starting quarterback next week against the 6-1 Detroit Lions.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Malik Willis Discusses The Throw To Jayden Reed Late In the Game
After the game, Packers quarterback Malik Willis discussed the play with The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. On the field, after he completed the pass, he raised both of his arms in the air. Willis said:
“It was perfect. We love to see it.”
It was a beautiful throw from Willis to Reed to get them set up to win the game eventually. Jayden Reed also spoke to the media about the play and said:
“I already knew I was gonna be open before the play was even called. Just great play-calling by Coach and great execution by us.”
Jayden Reed only caught two passes for 55 yards receiving and zero touchdowns. Tucker Kraft was the leading receiver in this game with the Green Bay Packers with three receptions for 78 yards receiving and a touchdown.
As for Malik Willis, he completed 4-of-5 passes for 56 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 23 yards on four carries and zero touchdowns.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur Was Aggressive In The Final Minute
With the game tied at 27 in the final minute of the game, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur decided not to sit back and take a shot to win the game in regulation. Well, the gamble paid off for the team after all. LaFleur said to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
“I’m sure they were thinking like, ‘What the heck are these guys doing? They’re going to play for overtime. I was just hoping that there was going to be strong rotation and had a pretty good idea, with the amount of single safety they were playing throughout the course of the game, that there was a chance we could get it and we got it.”
This continues to be an amazing coaching job by LaFleur this season. He also deserves credit for making Malik Willis into a competent quarterback when Jordan Love went down with an injury.
