The Green Bay Packers have been cutting loose some players in the 2024 offseason. But unfortunately for them, they will have to see them twice a year, as they start the next chapter of their careers elsewhere in the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers and their fans have grown accustomed to this. From Brett Favre and Za’Darious Smith taking snaps for the Vikings or Robert Tonyan and Lukas Patrick going to the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers have had to deal with former players time and time again.
Most recently, Aaron Jones signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings to the distaste of Green Bay Packers fans. But that was not the only interdivisional move the Packers will have to deal with in the 2024-25 season, as a former safety will take snaps for the Chicago Bears next year.
Jonathan Owens Signs With The Chicago Bears
Johnathan Owens was a one-year signee with the Green Bay Packers in 2023, a member of an overall forgettable secondary that the Green Bay Packers are in the process of remodeling. After playing the most snaps out of anyone in the Packers safety room last season, he is on the move.

In 2023, Jonathan Owens took 928 snaps for the Green Bay Packers (3rd most on whole defense). He was signed to a one-year 1 million dollar contract for that season. Totaling 84 total tackles, three pass deflections, and a highlight scoop and score touchdown on Thanksgiving, Owens had an impact in the Green Bay Packers successful season.
Jonathan Owens also had a large hand in the special teams, often featured as the team’s gunner. His presence was palatable in that area, making key tackles multiple times throughout the season to pin teams’ offenses deep.
The Green Bay Packers now find themselves still thin at safety despite the star power signing of Xavier Mckinney. With the departure of starters Rudy Ford and Darnell Savage, the Packers only have four safeties on the roster, three of whom have less than two years of experience in the NFL. Though with the draft and remaining free agents on the board, there’s little doubt the Green Bay Packers will be able to address the issue,
Jonathan Owens’ Celebrity Counterpart
Owens brought another athlete with him in his tenure to Green Bay as well. His wife is Olympic Gold Medalist Simon Biles. She sported vocal support for him and the Green Bay Packers throughout the season, often featured at games. She continues her support for him as he makes the move to Chicago.

They have both shared great respect for the city and organization of the Green Bay Packers, but Simone Biles was quick to point out the pluses of her husbands moving to a mega-city.
I’m so excited about not having a connecting flight to go & see my husband hahahahaaha

Poking a bit of fun at the fact that Green Bay does not host a major airport. She also finds herself fond of the food and city of Chicago.

With the loss of Johnathan Owens, the Green Bay Packers also lose a member of the celebrity fan ring of honor.
