The Green Bay Packers’ strategy on offense against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday was clear: to run the ball down the throat of the visiting team.
With Jordan Love out with a knee injury and with Malik Willis starting, the Packers got running back Josh Jacobs a ton of touches. Green Bay’s splashy offseason acquisition went off for 151 rushing yards on 32 carries – double his carries in Week 1. Willis also ran for 41 yards on six rushing attempts. As a team, the Packers racked up 261 rushing yards on 53 carries for an average of 4.9 yards per carry in a 16-10 win.
Jacobs spoke about the Packers’ tactic after the game, while also giving praises to Willis.
Via Rob Demovsky of ESPN:
“It was definitely huge because obviously he’s only been here two weeks, Jacobs said of the run game. “He did really good with what was asked of him, but we knew we had to come in and run the ball today. We knew we had to set that tone.”
Will the Green Bay Packers go run-heavy again in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans?
That could be the same tactic again for the Packers in Week 3 if Willis gets another chance to start in lieu of Love, who suffered a knee injury back in Green Bay’s Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
The Titans are 10th in the NFL so far in the 2024 season with 92.5 yards allowed per game.
