The Green Bay Packers may have found their next franchise quarterback in Jordan Love. Over the last month of football, Jordan Love has shown tremendous strides and proven that he is moving in the right direction for this franchise.
Ross Uglem annotated that in the last four weeks, Jordan Love ranks 5th in Pro Football Focus’s passing grade league-wide, 5th in Big Time Throws, 5th in yards per attempt, 6th in adjusted completion percentage, & 4th in first downs.
Through 11 games in 2023 Jordan Love has a passer rating of 87.4, 2,599 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Could Love already have earned his next contract with the Packers?
The Green Bay Packers Aren’t Able To Give Jordan Love A Contract Until A Certain Timeframe
According to Packers salary cap expert Ken Ingalls:
The more I investigate, research, and ask those smarter than me – It appears the Packers are unable to extend Jordan Love until after May 2, 2024.
This means his current contract carries into the start of the 2024 season & can’t extend until after initial free agency & Draft.
I thought the Packers would have structured Jordan Love’s current contract extension to circumvent the 12-month renegotiation by inflating his 3 void year salaries.
They did not – the void year salaries are at the minimum, so this trick is unavailable. There is a possible CBA rules interpretation where an extension is possible earlier, but nobody I have spoken to can find an example of this happening under the new CBA since most initial rookie extensions we see aren’t only 1-year like Jordan Love’s, so it has never come up.
What Does This Mean Going Forward?
From March until April 2024 the NFL will go through free agency and the NFL draft. May is when franchises can decide to use a fifth-year option on players selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. This month is also when rookie minicamps typically happen and the spring league meeting occurs.
It will be during this time that the team has their initial option to sign Love to a long-term deal. It will be months after the 2023-24 season ends when the Packers and Love come to some type of long term deal.
