The Green Bay Packers have made some moves at running back this offseason but they could be potentially looking at more and Isaiah Davis is a name to watch for. He is one of the running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft and played college football at South Dakota State.
Davis participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl and he also was at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Indiana a couple of weeks ago. Isaiah Davis last season rushed for 1,578 yards on 236 carries and 18 touchdowns, along with averaging 6.7 yards per carry.
He is 6’1″ and weighs 220 lbs. Davis also caught 23 passes for 199 yards receiving and one touchdown, along with averaging 8.7 yards per carry. Isaiah Davis is 22 years old and won back-to-back FCS championships with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
Robbie Rouse, the running backs coach at South Dakota State said to the media about Isaiah Davis’s time with the Jackrabbits by saying:
“He was extremely productive. The offense ran through him.”
This could mean he could have the potential to be a three-down back in the future at the NFL level. On the Green Bay Packers roster, Josh Jacobs is expected to be the three-down back with A.J. Dillon listed as the second running back on a one-year deal.
This should not stop general manager Brian Gutekunst from drafting a running back with one of their 11 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. Rouse also added about Davis by saying:
“His greatest strength is his feet. You typically don’t see feet like that on bigger backs. His contact balance and his vision are very elite as well.”
Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst Selecting South Dakota State Running Back Isaiah Davis in the 2024 NFL Draft Wouldn’t Be the First Time Gutekunst Went to the FCS Pool
Over the last couple of NFL Drafts, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has selected at least one player from the FCS. In 2022, he selected wide receiver Christian Watson from North Dakota State. In 2023, he selected tight end Tucker Kraft from South Dakota State.
If the Packers did select Davis, he would be reunited with college teammate Tucker Kraft. At the moment, Emanuel Wilson is the third running back, but Isaiah Davis feels like he would have more potential moving forward than him.
South Dakota State running backs coach Robbie Rouse also added:
“Davis is very powerful and strong. He has a willingness not to go down easily. His feet are so nifty that doesn’t allow defenders to get clean shots on him.”
This could be the kind of running back that head coach Matt LaFleur would want in his offense. The Packers would be drafting Davis for depth purposes but would have the potential to do more.
