The Green Bay Packers are entering the 2023 season with a new starting quarterback for the first time in 15 years. Jordan Love is taking the reins of the offense after sitting behind Aaron Rodgers for three years. This is a very similar situation to when Rodgers took over after backing up Brett Favre for three seasons. At the time, there were many questions surrounding Rodgers and whether or not he would be a suitable replacement for Favre. Similarly, fans and analysts are asking the same questions now about Love. One former Packers player, Gilbert Brown, has a bold prediction for how Love will do as Green Bay’s starting quarterback.
Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown Says Jordan Love Will Reset the Bar
Every Monday, Gilbert Brown does a segment called “Under the Helmet with the Gravedigger” on The Earl Ingram Show. This week, Brown discussed the transition from Rodgers to Love and how he thinks the new starter will play in 2023 and beyond:
“Let me tell you about what’s going to happen with Jordan Love. In the Green Bay Packers annals of time, from the 60’s to now, a bar has been set from Bart Starr. The bar has been set. Now, from Bart Starr all the way down to Aaron Rodgers, that bar was so high that Brett Favre had to reach up and grab that bar.
“From Bart Starr, then there was a gap. Still some great quarterbacks in there, right? When Brett Favre came, he reset the bar. Okay? Aaron Rodgers reached up and grabbed that bar. We didn’t know nothing about him. He could’ve been just another quarterback that ain’t worth two cents. As a Green Bay Packer, we set the bar high. Aaron Rodgers grabbed that bar.
“Now, Jordan Love has to reach up and grab that bar. They drafted this man first round, he got all the pressure in the world on his back, and I promise you, he’s going to answer the bell!
“He is going to answer the bell because the bar is set he got to grab it. Period.
Ingram is not a believer in Jordan Love. He argued with Brown that just because the bar is set does not mean Love is going to be great. Brown retorted, “He’s not ‘going to be,’ he HAS to be.”
Gilbert Brown Has Strong Words for the Green Bay Packers Front Office
Ingram was determined to convince Brown that Jordan Love is not going to live up to the standard set by Starr, Favre, and Rodgers. He asked Brown what would happen if Love struggles. Brown’s answer was realistic and a call to action for the Packers’ front office:
“Oh, he will have struggles. He’s going to have struggles because they [the Packers’ front office] is messing around and not getting him no help.”
There is a great debate among fans and analysts over whether or not the Packers should take a pass catcher (wide receiver or tight end) in the first round. It certainly sounds like Brown is all for taking one of those first. He is a big believer in Jordan Love, as is the front office. Now all that is left is get him some weapons.
