As it stands currently, the Green Bay Packers have about $49 million in salary cap space heading into NFL free agency. While some of this money will need to be used on this year’s draft class and practice squad, Green Bay will be able create more space with restructures, releases, and trades. In any case, it is more money than they have had to work with in a number of years.
One of the specific ways that the Packers are expected to create more cap space is by moving on from two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. While he is still one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when healthy, the problem is that he has not been on field very often over the last four seasons. Alexander has played 14 out of a possible 34 games in the last two years, and 34 out of 68 over the last four.
By moving Alexander, whether it be by trade or release, Green Bay can create a little over $6 million more in salary cap space. They will, however, need to add some depth to the position.
The Green Bay Packers Have Been Linked to DJ Reed in Free Agency

In addition to moving on from Alexander, Green Bay is likely also going to let Eric Stokes go in free agency after they did not pick up his fifth-year option for 2025. While they have Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine at the position, they need quality depth, including a player that could potentially be a starter.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, one name that at least one NFL agent believes will generate interest from the Packers is soon-to-be former New York Jets cornerback DJ Reed.
“One agent told me specifically, your team (the Packers) is going to be a player in free agency this year,” Demovsky said (via Packers Wire). “This agent was left with the impressive that the Packers were going to be in the cornerback, defensive line and receiver market.
“One name that was mentioned to me…one guy that I had heard to keep an eye on for the Packers was D.J. Reed.”
Last season, Reed did not have an interception, but did have 11 passes defended on a Jets passing defense that was actually the fourth-best in the NFL against the pass. Opposing quarterbacks completed just 57.1% of passes when targeting him to go with an 87.6 passer rating.
In fact, quarterbacks have completed less than 60% of passes when throwing Reed’s way in three of the last four seasons.
According to Spotrac, Reed has a market value of four years and $58.6 million, or $14.7 million per season. That is certainly an amount that Green Bay can afford. One of the best cornerbacks on the market, the Packers may have competition from other teams when it comes to trying to lure him to Green Bay.
That being said, they landed the best safety on the market last year, too.
