The Green Bay Packers have a great deal to be proud of following their 2023 season. While many expected them to finish at or near the bottom of the NFC, the Packers put together a 9-8 campaign, clinched the seventh seed in the NFC Playoffs, and upset the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round. While there were struggles along the way, it is hard to be displeased with the season overall.
Of course, Green Bay’s improbable run came to an end in the divisional round of the NFC Playoffs. Even though they held the lead going into the fourth quarter against the eventual NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers, they were unable to hang on and ended up going home far earlier than they wanted.
The 49ers proceeded to beat the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game, but fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII. After the game, many 49ers players admitted that had they known the NFL’s overtime rules, they would have played the final period of the game differently.
Their not knowing what the rules were in the biggest game of their lives drew much criticism on social media, including from Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
Green Bay Packers Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell Calls Out San Francisco 49ers Players
On Monday afternoon, Campbell took to social media to call out the 49ers players for not knowing the overtime rules:
They really got on national TV and said they didn’t know the OT rules in the biggest game of your life lol

One NFL fan had joked on social media that the 49ers players and hip-hop artist Ice Spice, who was at the game with Taylor Swift, were learning the overtime rules at the same time:
Ice spice and the 49er learning the OT rules at the same time is crazy 😭 me too 🫱🏼🫲🏻

One things is for sure, it was certainly not a good look for the players. However, it bears mentioning that coaches are the ones who need to make sure the players know the rules. If anything, the 49ers not knowing the NFL’s overtime rules is an indictment on head coach Kyle Shanahan more than it is one on any individual player.
