The Green Bay Packers are ready to usher in the Jordan Love era. While the Aaron Rodgers saga still continues, all reports seem to indicate that a deal will get done at some point. This does leave a major hole in a key position, backup quarterback. It seems the Packers are considering all options including former top 5 pick, Carson Wentz.
Green Bay Packers Considering Carson Wentz For Backup Role
Wentz has had an up-and-down career. After being taken with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, he bounced around to a couple of other teams. He was the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts for a season before being traded to the Washington Commanders. He lost the starting job early in the season and was released in the off-season. There is some noise around him coming to Green Bay.
“The Packers are looking at veteran options behind Jordan Love. One name I have heard that they are considering is Carson Wentz.” one former NFL executive said.
It isn’t surprising that the team is looking at a veteran option. Injuries happen in this league so it isn’t a bad idea to have a competent backup waiting in the wings.
Is Wentz A Good Option?
Wentz has had his share of struggles in the past couple of years. However, those were all in starting quarterback roles. For the Packers, he would be the backup. It is worth noting as well that the situations in Indianapolis and Washington were not the greatest. The infrastructure of Green Bay is much better than those two organizations. To have a former starter able to come in for a series or two or even a game or two would be nice. A veteran option like Wentz would definitely be better than a late-round rookie that is a complete wild card.

I don’t love Wentz as a starting quarterback but as a backup, I’d be happy to have him on the team. All indications are that he is also a really great teammate and teacher. Love can use all the support he can get this season. This is one roster spot that isn’t a huge deal but will be interesting to see what direction the Packers decide to go.

I like the kid we got.
Danny Etlinger is it ?
Aaron Rodgers should be the backup if he wants to retire here, he can sign for the team at the veteran league minimum. Not that loyal is he ?
Wentz blew his wad in Philly during the SuperBowl year. He would look decent if playing in XFL OR USFL. Most small school QB’s never pan out, I.e. Trey in SF? Sold the farm for him and yet to play much, what’s the hold up ShannieJr?
