Aaron Rodgers may no longer be with the Green Bay Packers but there’s no denying that his former team still holds a special place in his heart. This is totally understandable considering how the four-time NFL MVP spent 18 years of his career with the Packers before he decided to take his talents to the New York Jets this summer.
Rodgers is still clearly invested in Green Bay’s campaign, and the fact that he came to Jordan Love’s defense after the young quarterback’s poor performance against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday is a clear testament to this fact. As it turns out, the 39-year-old also has a couple of things to say about former Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.
Aaron Rodgers Comments on Davante Adams’ Game Vs. Green Bay Packers
There was a lot of attention on Adams ahead of Monday’s contest against his former team. Unfortunately, the three-time All-Pro wide receiver did not get as much attention on the field for the Raiders.
Rodgers took issue with this fact as he called out Las Vegas for not giving his former teammate enough opportunities to impact the game:
“Davante’s always open,” Rodgers said (h/t Cody Benjamin of CBS). “‘Covered’ to him is just different than other people. … You just gotta stick with him. Listen, I watched the game last night. I love Davante. He’s still a dear friend of mine. I thought he handled everything really, really well. Because that game meant a lot to him. You know, going back against your former team. Four targets? That ain’t it.
“… You gotta give him an extra look, because he’s able to do things on different timin. The facts are what Davante Adams does at the line of scrimmage, what Davante does down the field, is like no one else can do. You have to give him opportunities.”
After a memorable debut campaign with the Raiders last season, Adams now appears to be on the outside looking in. So much so, that he has already been linked to a potential trade away from Las Vegas. Rodgers just wants to remind the Raiders — and everyone out there, for that matter — that Davante Adams is still a hell of a player.
Aaron Rodgers Reacts to Davante Adams-Jimmy Garoppolo Partnership
Las Vegas decided to move on from Derek Carr this past summer, who happens to be a good friend and former college teammate of Adams. It’s Jimmy Garoppolo who’s taken over the reins for the Raiders this season, and there has been a lot of talk about Jimmy G targeting WR Jakobi Meyers more significantly than Adams.
Adams was quick to play down this supposed issue by pointing to a shoulder injury as the culprit behind his recent lack of success. Rodgers praised the former Packers wideout for how he has responded to the criticism:
“Davante handled it the right way,” Rodgers said. “He’s a pro. And Jimmy’s doing the best he can. … And they got the win, which is the most important thing. But if you wanna be dynamic …”
