The Green Bay Packers are one of three finalists to host the NFL draft for the 2024 season.
During a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, Packers’ President and CEO Mark Murphy announced the most decorated franchise is in the running to host the 2024 NFL draft. He has been striving to get Green Bay a chance to host a draft for few years now. They were hopeful to host the 2022 draft. However, because of COVID-19, the opportunity was given to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Murphy’s Comments
“We’ll never host a Super Bowl, that’s the reality. I do think the league is looking at teams and cities that will be unable to host Super Bowls,” Murphy told reporters afterward. “One way to reward them and their community, especially with the support they’ve provided teams and their communities, is to award them the draft. If you look at it, after almost 30 years in New York, every year they’re moving it around.”
“I’m optimistic. I think we have a good opportunity… it’s going to be a little bit of a challenge for us but it’ll be a different type (of draft). I think it’ll be an awful lot of people driving in from Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago.” said Murphy.
Destination Green Bay
What will help in hosting the draft is the new Resch Expo Center. Located across South Oneida Street, east of Lambeau Field, is the 127,000 square foot column free exposition center. The grand opening is in January 2021, and it will host trade and consumer shows, along with sporting events.
In addition, the Titletown District is a 45-acre development project that includes spots for business, recreational, and entertainment purposes. Located west of Lambeau Field, it will help host events throughout the draft, and include residential areas for guests. “By 2024, Titletown is going to look a lot different than it does now and be even more attractive as a destination”, Murphy added.
The NFL draft hasn’t been hosted in Wisconsin since it was at the Schroeder Hotel in Milwaukee in 1940. The Packers and city of Green Bay are hopeful to land the opportunity to host the 2024 NFL draft. It would be an excellent attraction for NFL fans due to its rich history, tradition, and it’s home to the greatest NFL franchise.
