Any time an NBA team picks in the lottery, they want that player to make an immediate impact. This year’s rookie class has been stellar with many top-ten picks making a huge impact on their teams already. One top pick is struggling for his new team. Former Wisconsin Badger Johnny Davis has been relegated to the G League.
Former Wisconsin Badger Johnny Davis Relegated to G League
It is safe to say that Johnny Davis has been a disappointment so far. He has struggled especially on offense which led to his demotion to the G League. Davis’ offensive play was one of the knocks on him coming out of the draft. Despite this, the Washington Wizards selected him with the 10th overall pick. His offensive output got so bad that the Wizards decided to send him to the Capital City Go-Go for a while to give him some development time.
Davis Is Taking It In Stride
Davis was quoted saying “I’m glad they sent me down here.” He understands that there are some aspects of his game that could use some work and the G League is a great place to work on skills. The Wizards are going nowhere this season and do not need Davis to make an impact this season. What they do not need is for Davis to be a bust. The G League is also not a death sentence. Jordan Poole was in the G League and ended up playing real minutes for a team that won the NBA finals. He now has gotten a huge contract extension and is a vital part of the Warriors’ future.
Davis has the defensive capability to be an impact player in the league. Unfortunately, it does not matter how good you are on the defensive side of the ball if you cannot score. If your opponent can play 4-on-5 when you are on offense, it is going to be hard to score enough to win. I believe that Davis has it in him and the relegation to the G League is exactly what he needs. Hopefully, he develops and is an important piece for the Wizards moving forward.
