Milwaukee Brewers: “High Likelihood” Struggling Reliever Makes 2025 Opening Day Roster

The Milwaukee Brewers are starting the 2025 MLB regular season behind the eight ball, as it were, in regard to their starting pitching. Going into opening weekend, they only have three healthy starters: Freddy Peralta, Nestor Cortes, and Aaron Civale. Jose Quintana is not injured, but will not be ready for the first few series of the season due to being signed late in the spring.

Throughout the course of Spring Training, DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Tobias Myers each sustained injuries. Hall is currently on the 60-day injured list with a lat strain, while Ashby and Myers will be sidelined for a few weeks with oblique injuries.

Due to the numerous injuries to their starting rotation, it is highly probable that Milwaukee will have to rely on their bullpen early and often to start the season. Because of this, one pitcher who has struggled this spring is “highly likely” to make the Opening Day roster anyway.

Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Says Elvin Rodriguez Will Probably Make the Opening Day Roster

    Milwaukee Brewers, Elvin Rodriguez
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Elvin Rodriguez walks toward the outfield during spring training workouts Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at American Family Fields of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.

Earlier this year, the Brewers signed right-handed pitcher Elvin Rodriguez to a minor league contract. Prior to the signing, he had bounced around the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, and Tampa Bay Rays. He made his Major League debut in 2022 with the Tigers and appeared in one game in 2023 with the Rays.

This spring, Rodriguez has not performed particularly well. He is currently 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA and 1.96 WHIP in four appearances. Still, due to their need of pitchers who can throw multiple innings, manager Pat Murphy says there is a high likelihood that he will be on the Opening Day roster:

Elvin Rodriguez, pitching today for the Brewers, is a roster call that has “already been made,” Pat Murphy said.

“There’s a high likelihood he’s on the team.”

    — Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) March 23, 2025

Rodriguez spent the 2024 season pitching in Japan, where he posted a 2-1 record and 1.74 ERA in 49 appearances.

Obviously, the Brewers are hoping he can recapture some of that magic early and often in the 2025 MLB season. They will need him, especially, when their starting pitchers are injured as they are now.
