General Manager Brian Gutekunst deserves a lot of credit for his job in building the Packers roster. There is so much talent on both sides of the ball for the Packers. This is certainly the most talented team that they have had since 2014. Each position on the Packers is loaded, and if everybody can stay healthy, this can be a dangerous team. The Packers might have the deepest roster in the NFL. Here is why.
Packers Have the Deepest Wide Receiver Group
For years, people have said that Aaron Rodgers does not have enough weapons around him. Yet, he has plenty this season at wide receiver. Led by Davante Adams, the clear best receiver of the group, there are many options at wide receiver for the Packers. This group brings a lot to the table for the Packers offense. They bring a combination of size to win the 50/50 balls, speed to stretch defenses, and a nice mix of young and veteran talent. The only knock is none of them are big names outside of Davante Adams, which should not be a real problem. Expect big things from this wide receiver group this season.
Packers Have a Deep Safety Group
This is the best safety group the Packers have had in many years. It is led by the underrated duo of Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos. Yet, behind them, there is some talent as well. One is Vernon Scott, who showed flashes last year playing deep safety and playing in the box. In addition, Henry Black is making some noise. He is getting looks along with Scott when the Packers go to a three safety look on defense. Will Redmond is good for depth and contributes to special teams. However, Redmond should not be playing a lot unless injuries occur. This group will provide a strong backend of the Packer’s defense that they have not had in a long time.
The Deepest Offensive Line Group This Year
The Packers take a lot of pride in their offensive line. With Corey Linsley gone, and David Bakhtiari missing time recovering from a torn ACL, the Packers made moves. One was drafting Josh Myers this year, who hopefully can be the next great Packers center. They have Elgton Jenkins, who can play in any spot on the offensive line. He may most likely play left tackle until David Bakhtiari returns. In addition, Jon Runyan, who played well when called into action due to injuries, might get a starting job this year. Lucas Patrick, a returning starter, will probably be the guy at right guard, but has competition. The Packers used the draft to get guys like Royce Freeman and Cole Van Lanen. Do not be surprised if the Packers have the best offensive line this year.
A Strong Cornerback Group This Year
The Packers have a talented cornerback group this year. They are led by Jaire Alexander, one of the best lockdown corners in the NFL. They have Kevin King who re-signed on a one-year deal, but more for depth and may not be the starter this year. Have an outstanding rookie in Eric Stokes who will be on the field a lot for the Packers defense and is learning well in training camp facing Davante Adams every day. Josh Jackson is having a strong camp so far, which is promising. Chandon Sullivan, most likely, is the starter once again in the slot, but do not sleep on Kadar Hollman to give him some competition. This year, Shemar-Jean Charles a sleeper from the draft is showing flashes in training camp. A pretty deep cornerback group that could be one of the best in the NFL.
A Real Stable Running Back Group
The Packers have a stable running back group this season. Aaron Jones signed a bargain deal with the Packers and is locked up for the next couple of seasons. His complementary running mate is bruising back AJ Dillion, who will indeed make an impact on offense. Dillion will be the back that wears down defenses in the fourth quarter. Then you have Kylin Hill, who was the last pick of the Packers draft this year. He could be the perfect third-down passing back. Patrick Taylor and Dexter Williams will be good depth if one of them makes the roster. Watch out for the Packers rushing attack this season.
Packers Have the Deepest Tight End Room
Since the days of Jermichael Finley, the Packers have struggled at the tight end position. The Packers have a really good tight end group this year. They have Robert Tonyan who tied for first amongst all tight ends in touchdowns in 2020. Marcedes Lewis is the veteran leader of the group and one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL. Josiah Deguara is recovering from a torn ACL, but is making progress and will hopefully be a big part of the offense. Jace Sternberger is in a make-or-break year, not to mention already suspended two games that do not help his case. Dominique Dafney provides another piece that can be used on this offense as well. This will be a group to watch this season.
