Aaron Rodgers seems to be a polarizing player amongst his teammates and media. The former Green Bay Packers quarterback had the power to help Randall Cobb continue his NFL career. He also appeared to favor some wide receivers over others, especially preferring veterans to young players. Davante Adams has recently been speaking to the media about his time in Green Bay. He confirmed the suspicion that Rodgers was a major reason for leaving the Packers.
Davante Adams didn’t need, but wanted Aaron Rodgers?
Adams said recently that he proved last season he didn’t need Rodgers, or any quarterback, to make him an All-Pro wide receiver. Many fans on social media took that to mean that Adams left Green Bay with a chip on his shoulder. He wanted to leave the Packers as a chance to get away from Rodgers.
Some of that statement appears to be correct—at least the part where Rodgers is a reason Adams decided to be traded to the Raiders. Of course, the main reason was money, as Adams felt the lowball offer from the front office was unfair. However, Adams said on the I Am Athlete podcast recently that he realized Rodgers’ time with the Packers would likely be ending within a few seasons.
“I had some decisions to make so that’s basically what came down to that, and obviously the whole Aaron thing and his uncertainty of his future in Green Bay factored in heavy for me,” Adams said.
🧀 @tae15adams tells @IAMATHLETEpod he’s got nothing but love for the packers— still talks to Brian, Matt and Mark— but the offer, “south of 20” he got from them before his last year in GB was a primary reason for not being here anymore. https://t.co/6DMxI5z0I8 pic.twitter.com/cxHmSnPasy

The Green Bay Packers didn’t have a future for Adams

It appears Adams knew that his best chance to earn good paycheck with the Packers was with Rodgers still on the team. He must not have had faith in Jordan Love after the former first-round pick’s first two seasons with the team. Adams made sure he was traded to a team that paid him and had a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback in Derek Carr. But it’s interesting to see how much respect Adams gave Rodgers when thinking about where to go next in his career.
