To say that Chicago Bears wide receiver Chase Claypool had a disappointing performance in their Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers would be an understatement. So much so, that there has been talk about Chicago potentially deactivating the 25-year-old ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Chicago Bears HC Hints at Chase Claypool Outlook
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has now spoken out about the team’s outlook on Claypool following his Week 1 disaster. The Chicago shot-caller was asked about the possibility of Equanimeous St. Brown replacing Claypool on the roster for Sunday’s contest against the Bucs, to which Eberflus dropped a cryptic response:
“We’re looking at all possibilities right now,” Eberflus said, via team beat reporter Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “I’m not going to talk about who’s going to be up or down for the game for obvious reasons. We’re looking at all things to make our team better.”
That’s not exactly a vote of confidence in Claypool’s direction. Eberflus obviously did not want to publicly pull the plug on his young wide receiver — at least not yet — but what you can say for sure is that at this point, there’s no guarantee that Claypool will be on the field come Sunday.
Chase Claypool Draws Flack for Lackluster Performance Vs. Packers
The mean streets of Twitter were not kind to Claypool at all. They saw the performance he put in against Green Bay in Week 1 and they showed absolutely no mercy to the former Notre Dame standout:
This Chase Claypool compilation is insane.
It will be interesting to see how Eberflus handles a player who loafed the entire game.

I am not a big ESB guy…but if Claypool is going to be non-existent in the pass game anyways, ESB deserves to be active next week just for the blocking

Flus should start a meeting with every member of the team and replay this 15 times without saying a single word. Then start talking about hustle and how important individual responsibilities are.

I hate saying a player is soft because you don't make it to the NFL being soft. But, if I was to make a game tape of a receiver being soft, that would be a good start.

Claypool is the Ben Simmons of WR’s.

You have to note that Claypool suffered a hamstring injury during training camp, and the fact that he’s still recovering from this earlier knock could have affected his play. Nevertheless, it’s the lack of apparent effort that the fans have called out here, and it will be very interesting to see if Eberflus and his coaching staff actually feel the same way.
