A little over a year ago, California native Deacon Hill pulled the trigger early and committed to the Wisconsin Badgers. Kansas State & Nevada were his only other offers, yet WI QB Coach Jon Budmayr saw some special qualities he liked about Hill. As they did for Graham Mertz, Wisconsin made an offer to Hill before he first started his first varsity game. Also like Mertz, Wisconsin received verbal commitments from their future signal callers early in the process. Hill was a low ranked QB at the time of his commitment, but upon recent evaluations he now has a 4 star ranking from 247Sports.
247Sports Analyst Greg Biggins compared Hill to Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. “Big, strong signal caller with a powerful down field arm. Might have the strongest arm in the ’21 class but is more then just a big arm, he’s a pure thrower who can change speeds and throws with timing and anticipation. Is accurate to all three levels of the field and boasts a quick, tight release and doesn’t need much of a wind up to get the ball down the field.”
Deacon took the time to discussed his recruitment and other things with Wisconsin Sports Heroics.
Who is your greatest mentor?
My greatest mentor is my dad. Although he was really a basketball player it’s doesn’t really matter. The things he teaches me and what he continues to do for me is something I can’t explain how thankful I am for him.
What stood out most about the Wisconsin coaching staff versus others to shut down your recruitment early?
The coaching staff was just super genuine and they were straight with me about everything. It was more about what I was going to get out of Wisconsin rather than what they were going to get out of me.
Greg Biggins mentioned you lost 20lbs this offseason. Can you tell us about your body transformation?
I have just been working really hard this off season so I can be where I want to be when season comes around. I had to make changes so I would be able to play at the next level.
What does the future of the Wisconsin football program look like through the eyes of Deacon Hill?
Through my eyes Wisconsin football is the best football around. It’s definitely the place to be to play ball!
Favorite thing to do outside of football?
My favorite thing would probably to go play some basketball or golf. Or I’ll just hangout and relax with some friends.
