Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames has made quite the name for himself. After being acquired by the Brewers in 2021, he immediately became a fan favorite with his booming home runs and fun-loving personality. This past season, Adames broke Robin Yount’s club record for home runs in a season by a shortstop. He ended the season with a slash line of .238/.298/.458 with 31 home runs and 98 RBI. Ever since the 2021 season ended, many Brewers fans have been calling for the organization to sign Adames to a long-term contract. In an article by MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, Adames echoed that sentiment.
Willy Adames Wants to Finish His Career with the Brewers
When asked about if there had been any extension talks with the Brewers, Adames said,
“We’ve had conversations about that, and I let them know that obviously I want to stay. I like it here. I just have to do my job and let my agents handle that.”
He took it a step further:
“I’m always open to listen to what they’re thinking, and if it’s something that’s good for both sides, I’m open to it. I let my agent handle that. I love it here, I feel good here, I feel comfortable here and I wish I could stay here the rest of my career. But at the end of the day, they have to put everything together and see if we can work something out. Hopefully we can, and we can make it happen. But I’m always willing to hear what they have to say.”
Including this upcoming season, Adames has two more years of club control remaining. That means he will not become a free agent until the winter of 2024-2025. The two sides have time to work something out. However, it may be more cost-effective of the Brewers to get a deal done sooner rather than later.
