Amos and Smith Work With Packers To Lower Cap Hit

Saftey Adrain Amos and Linebacker Preston Smith both worked out a way with the Packers for them to lower their cap hit on Friday.

Adrian Amos restructured his deal to free up some cap room for Packers, per source.

A breakdown of the adjusted contract for #Packers OLB Preston Smith, who now sticks in GB:
    — $8M salary ($200K workout bonus, $300K in 46-mans, $6.5M signing bonus, $1M base.)
    — $4.4M available in sack incentives, so he can eclipse the $12M he was set to earn before the redo.

    — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 13, 2021

    Adiran Amos

Amos was set to have a cap hit of $10.3 million but after converting his roster bonus ($1.5M) and a chunk of his base salary ($4.3M) to a signing bonus, close to $3 million is freeded up from the 2021 cap space. The remaining money will count to the 2022 season.

The saftey has been a corrner stone of the Packers defence having started all sixteen regular season games of the previous two seasons. During those two seasons Amos only missed 15 of the 2,059 snaps the Packers defense took. He has also been filling up the stat sheet with 4 interseptions, 3 sacks, 167 tackles, and 8 tackles for loss.

    Preston Smith

It will appear that OLB Smith will be returning to the Packers for the 2021 campaign after some doubt they could get the rework done. His base salary will be lower than before the rework but with insentives, he will have a chance to out earn his original deal.

Sack incentives details for Preston Smith:
    — $500K for 6 sacks.
    — $750K more for 8 sacks.
    — $750K more for 10 sacks.
    — $1.2M more for 12 sacks.
    — $1.2M more for 14 sacks.
    Total possible: $4.4M

Smith had 12 sacks in 2019, so it’s right there. Either way, Preston Smith stays. https://t.co/wGVZafc1We

    — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 13, 2021

As Rapoport mentioned Smith had 12 sacks in 2019 so he is capable of getting some of the higher bonuses. He will have to make improvements after only recording 4 sacks in 2020. He also saw a decrease in overall production in 2020 with 14 less tackles and 4 less tackles for loss.

Smith’s rework saves the Packers a reported $9.7 million in cap space. With the savings made today, the Packers have a bit more than $1 million to go in the cutting department.

In addition to adjusting S Adrian Amos' deal, the #Packers have also altered OLB Preston Smith's to lower his salary cap number, a source said. Don't have the details yet, but Brian Gutekunst is tapping sources wherever he can in order to eliminate $9.7 million in cap overage.
