The Milwaukee Brewers officially know where they will be drafting next July during the 2024 MLB Draft. Although they were a playoff team (expected to have the 20th pick) and not a part of the draft lottery, luxury tax penalties from a few non-playoff teams resulted in them moving up three positions.
That being said the Brewers will hold the 17th overall selection next summer in Arlington. It is never too early for a mock draft and MLB.com recently provided their first of the off-season. Their prediction has Milwaukee landing a stud two-way player from Oklahoma State University.
2024 MLB Mock Draft: Milwaukee Brewers select OF/P Carson Benge.
20 year old Carson Benge is a left-handed hitting and right-handed throwing two-way player. MLB.com lists him as first round potential from a hitting standpoint and third round material as a pitcher. He was a semi-finalist as the best two-way player in college baseball in 2023 after red shirting his freshman season due to undergoing tommy john surgery.
With 2023 being his first collegiate season following elbow surgery the Cowboys were more cautious with him as a pitcher. He threw just 35 innings, capped out at 5.1 innings pitched as a season maximum, and finished with a 6.69 ERA. Although his pitching statistics aren’t particularly good, his fastball did reach 96 MPH and he has a solid slider to pair with that.
At the plate Oklahoma State unleashed him. His .345/.468/.538/1.002 slash is eye-catching and he walked (42) more times than he struck out (32). To go along with that he was near the top in regards to exit velocity and there is hope that his power numbers will improve next spring (seven home runs in 2023).
A lot can happen between now and draft day including players stock rising and falling. For now Carson Benge is one name to know and at least keep an eye on.
