The Wisconsin Badgers are hosting a coveted quarterback this weekend. For a position that is constantly in the spotlight, being a quarterback at a high profile school will always come with intense scrutiny. While in an ideal world, you would love someone who never puts the ball in harms way and sets records in yards and touchdowns, that reality rarely happens.
With the up and downs of a college season, you want a quarterback who can not only lead you to the highs, but also manage the low points throughout a game and a season. This is likely why the Wisconsin Badgers staff is in talks with a player who has a history of rebounding from adversity. This transfer target would be a tremendous leader in this locker room.
Wisconsin Badgers In Person Visit
With reports surfacing of former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Kyle Van Dyke visiting with the coaching staff, it appears that the Wisconsin Badgers are, at least for now, in the driving seat to land the veteran starter. The former 4-star out of Connecticut has had his share of success, as well as rough spots in his young career so far.
As a freshman he was able to sit out a red shirt year, and learned behind starting quarterback D’Eriq King. His next year we won ACC Rookie of the Year, and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year filling in for an injured D’Eriq King for the rest of the season after three game. He put up good numbers, and an overall 7-5 record.
Wisconsin Badgers Recruit Tyler Van Dyke Resume
As a redshirt sophomore he led the Miami team, playing in nine games, throwing for 1835 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Battling through a shoulder injury, he was not only forced to miss games, but it also affected his throwing motion and performance.
When asked about the dip of positive attention and accolades from his rookie year he said the following:
I think we all fear failure at some point in our lives and it is common to think about your future. Our sports psychologist does a good job of helping me stay present and focused on the task at hand.
Showing the positive mental steps for someone that was then looking to get out of the slump he went on to add:
It was all about learning how to work through adversity and not worrying about the outside noise and where people are ranked. None of that matters. It is all about going out and performing.
For someone that intended to only worry about his improvement and setting up his teammates in a position to win, his 2023 season did not go quite as he was hoping for. Having been benched after poor play, and a high amount of interceptions, he was called on again late in the season to pull out the wins for his team.
Wisconsin Badgers Fit
For offensive coordinator of the Wisconsin Badgers, and air-raid disciple of Mike Leach, Phil Longo the pocket presence and ability of Van Dyke would be a welcomed addition. On throws of more than 15 yards, Van Dyke ranks among the top with a 47% completion percentage. And while Longo has stated in the past that he does look for a balanced approach, when throwing, relying on the arm talent of someone like Van Dyke would allow for the offensive run and be executed the way that it is drawn up.
When combining his ability, mindset, and proof of being bale to move to the next play, having a short memory, Van Dyke is the exact type of quarterback that the Wisconsin Badgers are looking for. While there may be blemishes on his resumes, it will not be surprising if both sides will see eye to eye, and that we see an announcement coming anytime soon.
