The Detroit Lions tasted defeat for the first time this season on Sunday in a 37-31 overtime loss against the Seattle Seahawks. To add insult to injury, starting running back David Montgomery was forced to exit the game with a thigh problem in the second half and was unable to return.
At this point, it’s looking like an extended absence for the 26-year-old RB.
Detroit Lions Lose David Montgomery in Week 2 Defeat Vs. Seahawks
Montgomery suffered the injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s game as he was battling for additional yards following a seven-yard catch. Detroit’s medical team quickly attended to Montgomery as they helped him hobble to the bench before eventually being carted off the field. He would not return to the game.
Despite playing just three quarters, Montgomery still led Detroit with 67 rushing yards on 16 carries, while also scoring his second touchdown of the season. Needless to say, the former Iowa State standout is an integral part of the Lions’ offense, and losing him would be a significant blow for the team, especially considering how they already lost defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a potentially season-ending pec injury also during their loss to Seattle.
David Montgomery Expected to Miss ‘A Couple of Weeks’
Montgomery himself has already spoken out about his injury status, and it isn’t good news for Lions fans. The running back stated that his thigh bruise could take “a couple weeks” to heal (h/t Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). However, Montgomery wouldn’t reveal much regarding the severity of the injury as he spoke to reporters after the game.
The Lions return to action on Sunday with a Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. It’s going to be a quick turnaround for them as they are slated to take on the Green Bay Packers on Thursday. At this point, it appears that David Montgomery won’t be available for both the Falcons and Packers matchups, and perhaps even beyond.
According to Kory Woods of mlive, the Lions are turning to Zonovan Knight amid Montgomery’s injury. Knight joined Detroit last August after he was waived by the New York Jets right before the start of the season. After signing with the Lions’ practice squad, the 22-year-old has now been promoted to the active roster amid Montgomery’s injury.
