Jeff Passan, a baseball columnist for ESPN, recently published a MLB trade deadline preview article. Shohei Ohtani was the first player that he discussed in his latest piece, but he also talked about the possibility of packaging two Milwaukee Brewers stars together in a trade.
Two Milwaukee Brewers stars are listed in a trade package deal in Jeff Passan’s MLB trade deadline preview.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Corbin Burnes is the first star player that Jeff Passan mentions. Rumors surrounding a Burnes trade have been prominent since the off-season. Ken Rosenthal recently talked about the possibility of a trade happening at this year’s deadline as well.
The second player that Passan discusses in a package deal with Burnes is shortstop Willy Adames. With the way the shortstop market played out last off-season Adames is expected to make a bunch of money that may be out of the Brewers price range. He is under club control through all of the 2024 season, so similar to Burnes there is no urgency to trade him.
“Officials believe a Burnes deal, if it does happen, is likelier to come in the winter, but if the deadline market shrivels and starting pitching is at a premium, the Brewers have shown they are willing to make value plays even when they’re uncomfortable and unpopular. And if there’s no [Dylan] Cease-and-[Tim] Anderson or [Shane] Bieber-and-[Amed] Rosario deals to be had, a Burnes-and-Willy Adames package would be plenty tempting.”
Jeff Passan did not list any sources regarding this trade package, which implies that this blockbuster trade is pure speculation. Expect rumors like this to intensify over the next few months for the 2023 trade deadline this year is on August 1.
