It is no secret that the Green Bay Packers are one of the most wide receiver needy team in the NFL. Even after the signing of Sammy Watkins, it is no secret where their priorities are. Having two draft picks in the first round can be vital to Green Bay getting their wide receiver of the future. However if the Packers stay put at pick #22, there are plenty of wide receiver needy teams who pick before them that they should keep in mind.
In order, the list of teams who pick before Green Bay who has a need at wide receiver (according to multiple sites):
#2: Detroit Lions
#3: Houston Texans
#4: New York Jets
#8: Atlanta Falcons
#10: New York Jets
#11: Washington Commanders
#13: Houston Texans
#14: Baltimore Ravens
#15: Philadelphia Eagles
#16: New Orleans Saints
#18: Philadelphia Eagles
#19: New Orleans Saints
#21: New England Patriots
That is 13 draft picks held by 9 different teams who all could very well take a wide receiver in round one. Each and every one of them pick before Green Bay at #22. Now clearly, these teams may not prioritize their wide receiver as the number one need, but if “best player available” falls to them as a wide receiver, taking one wouldn’t surprise anyone.
Should the Green Bay Packers Trade Up?
It feels as though the Packers are going to be watching the draft board closely. Surely these teams will not all pick a wide receiver, but if a few go earlier than expected Brian Gutekunst may feel the need to trade up. Gutekunst has traded up in the first round three of his four drafts as the Packers General Manager. We certainly can’t put it past him.
However it also comes into play how high the Packers have second round wide receivers graded. If Green Bay thinks the value in the second round for wide receivers is worth it, they may feel comfortable staying put. They could even focus on other positions at picks #22 and #28 if need be. Even if wide recievers are flying off the board.
